MARK CHAPMAN : PERU GALLERY

Subject:

Dilston Castle (II), Corbridge.

Built pre 16th century, the Castle, Hall and Chapel at Dilston were famous as the home of the Radcliffes, the Earls of Derwent Water, and their reluctant lead in the Jacobite Rebellion of 1715.
After the be-heading of James Radcliffe, Dilston, named after ‘Dyvels-ton’, became less important in the Tyne Valley, and the Castle is now a ruin.
Performances are held in front of the castle to celebrate the heroic and tragic episode of the Radcliffes and the rebellion, and there are ghosts often seen in the Castle, usually the Grey Lady.
