Subject:
Devils Water or ‘Dyvels Water’ at Dilston.
This wall is part of the 16th century walls around Dilston Castle, Hall and Chapel.
The Radcliffe family lived here, famous for their reluctant lead in the Jacobite Rebellion of 1715, and subsequent death for treason against the Protestant Royal family. After this, Dilston, named after ‘Dyvels-ton’, became less important in the Tyne Valley, and the Castle is now a ruin.
Performances are held in front of the castle to celebrate the heroic and tragic episode of the Radcliffes and the rebellion, and there are ghosts often seen in the Castle, usually the Grey Lady.
